Maintain Your Drains In 5 Easy Steps

Updated: Jan 13, 2023

How to easily maintain your drain in 5 steps

You think that your drain is working perfectly, until it experiences a problem. Before you can use your sink again, you have to spend a lot of time and money clearing the problem. It is possible to prevent this scenario by maintaining and caring for your drain every day. There are a few simple steps that can be taken to promote a healthy drain.

1. Water Temperature used correctly

You should pay attention to the water temperature. Did you know that very hot water can break up grease deposits? You must run hot water at least once a week. When you run your disposal, you should only run cold water. If you run your disposal with hot water, the grease will melt and coat the drain. The disposal can break it down if the grease is in a solid form.

2. Set Grease Aside

Speaking of grease, it’s best to keep it out of the disposal as much as possible. Oil and grease can bond with each other and with other solids to create giant clogs. Instead of pouring oil and grease down the kitchen drain, you should pour it into an old can or container and then throw it away.

3. Use a Drain Trap

Some substances, such as soap scum, crumbs, and hair, can't flow down the drain so you have to use a drain trap. These substances can get trapped in kitchen and bathroom drain if they get trapped in the shower drain. A drain trap can be placed over the sink opening to prevent it from being blocked. Instead of flowing down the drain, nonliquid substances will be sitting in the drain trap. You can throw the substances into the garbage after you remove the drain trap.

4. Keep Your Drain Clean

If you are worried that your drain is going to become a problem, you can clean it out with any of the methods listed. A half cup of baking soda can be poured into the drain. Next, put a quarter of a cup of white vinegar on top of the baking soda and then a quarter of a cup of salt on top of both. Pour boiling water into the sink after the drain has been left for 15 minutes. Pour a small amount of dish liquid into the drain for grease and oil build up. Slowly pour the boiling water into the drain. The grease should be washed away by dissolving the soap and water. If you want to get rid of the salt in the bathroom drain, try pouring it. If you want to leave your drain alone, put a quarter of a cup of white vinegar on the top of the salt. The hot water should be run down the drain an hour later. Gloves should be worn to protect your hands when pouring boiling water. You can keep your drain clear by adding bleach every now and then. After pouring a small amount of bleach down the drain, leave it for an hour or more before turning on the water.

5. Dont Drain These

You can do your part to prevent clogs by placing the following in the garbage rather than the drain:

  • Eggshells

  • Coffee grounds

  • Household cleaning products

  • Medications

  • Paper towels

  • Produce stickers

  • Napkins

  • Fruit peels

If you place garbage into the rubbish bin instead of the drain, you will be able to prevent clogs. You can avoid drainage problems if you follow these steps to keep your drains clean. Despite your best efforts, sometimes there are issues with the plumbing. Without the right equipment and training, it is difficult to remove a stubborn obstruction.
